Did you know that when you reply to internet business opportunities, all you’re seeing are opportunities from companies which have mastered great advertising?

But there are “secret” franchise concepts that operate “below the radar.” You may not come across them or recognize their names yet. But they match your core competencies–and they might position you at the forefront of an industry disruption that makes you wealthier than you ever imagined.

Here’s how I know this…it happened to me…twice. As a result, I’m particularly insightful at finding these gems…

After college I spent 13 years working my way up the ladder with Red Lobster and Chi-Chi’s restaurants, the first mass-marketed Mexican restaurant chain.  My Dad (a corporate attorney for his entire career because he liked the stability) loved the fact that I was in the restaurant industry. He’d make a great show of frequenting my companies and dropping my name to all the local managers. (As if out of 500 Red Lobster stores, someone might know me!)

By 1988 I helped Chi-Chi’s grow from 1 to 200 locations, with 15 stores developed and managed by me. The concept did so well, it eventually sold to Foodmaker for $230 million. (That was my first successful market disruption.) http://articles.latimes.com/1988-02-23/business/fi-44681_1_chi-chi-s-restaurants

As the sale with Foodmaker closed, I was introduced to investors who wanted to build  large box retail stores that featured 10,000 videos. They were looking for partners to develop markets and franchise stores.  This was a brand new concept that I’d never heard of, and they wanted to hire me because of my store expansion experience.

It was a big risk, and I loved the restaurant industry. But this was an exciting new opportunity and the concept was a fantastic idea. And there were 2 big obstacles.

First, in 1990, when people heard “video rental,” they thought, “adult films.” Second, how could I tell Dad I was leaving 2 stable restaurant companies to do…video rental?  Hardly anyone back then even owned a VCR!

Well, Dad survived my decision. And my new company turned out to be the break-thru concept of the 90s: Blockbuster Video! And my second market disruption experience.

(In fact, when I became Senior Vice President of Domestic Operations, Dad regularly visited Blockbuster to make sure the clerks knew his son was the Boss! That’s when I knew Blockbuster was a success!)

Do all franchises turn out to be a Blockbuster? No. But I can assure you that when you only look at “brand name” franchise concepts, you’ll never find a disruptor–that ship already sailed.

One of the benefits of having me as your coach* is that I study these “below the radar” concepts through the lens of knowing how a no-name idea becomes a mass-market trend. I’ll bring you the concepts that match your expertise and skills before they become priced out of the reach of a small investor.

In fact, many of the best franchises today are in service industries with Executive Models.  This means that if you have a proven track record as a business executive (like I did), you’ll excel at these concepts by running the business, not actually doing the work.
